How Helsingborg Turns Waste into Resources

Have you ever wondered how the City of Helsingborg manages its waste?

Helsingborg has received numerous awards for its environmental and sustainability efforts, including being named Sweden’s Most Environmentally Friendly Municipality on four occasions and being shortlisted twice as a finalist for the European Green Capital Award.

The Filborna waste management facility plays a key role in this work by transforming residual materials into valuable resources in support of a sustainable society.

During this two-hour study visit, participants will learn how Helsingborg is working towards becoming a climate-neutral city. The visit includes a guided bus tour of the area around the Filborna waste management facility. This educational visit provides insight into waste management and energy production and is delivered in collaboration with Miljöverkstaden, NSR, and Öresundskraft.

NSR AB (Nordvästra Skånes Renhållnings AB) is owned by six north-west Skåne municipalities: Bjuv, Båstad, Helsingborg, Höganäs, Åstorp, and Ängelholm.
Food waste is converted into fertiliser and biogas, which fuels buses and cars.
Garden waste is transformed into nutrient-rich soil and wood chips, which are used to produce district heating and electricity.
Residual waste is incinerated at the Filborna plant and converted into district heating and electricity.
